Crowning Your Kitchen

Benchtops + Splashbacks

So, you’ve begun thinking about the different elements of your custom kitchen design.

Cabinetry is sorted, you know what layout you’re working with, the flooring has been taken thoroughly into account. It’s surface time.

This blog is the second in our series of kitchen components, where we sit down with Wood Wizards owner, Jordan Corbett, to narrow down the “best of” when it comes to benchtops and splashbacks.

Now, trust us when we say a kitchen attracts mess like a magnet. A really strong one. Likely the most used room in your house… it endures cooking, entertaining, organising, working and eating. It should come as no surprise therefore, that your multipurpose room requires the right materials.

Whether glass, tiles, stone or laminate, it’s vital that your surfaces not only perform under everyday stresses – but they blend seamlessly with your design too. After all, it’s important you enjoy the room you’re in the most.

Working your way up

When it comes to kitchen renovations, we always recommend using lighter colours higher up in your space. This lifts the room and makes it feel more spacious.

Darker cabinetry can add depth and lighter tops promote an airy, bright atmosphere.

Of course, rules are there to be broken, but just make sure everything works together in harmony if you do decide to go against the grain.

A heartfelt thank you to Wood Wizards Kitchens for all the joinery and beautiful high-quality work that you did for our home. It looks and feels absolutely sensational. Everything flows so well; the aesthetics are timeless and your workmanship is fantastic. Thank you for meeting our timelines with such a wonderful result.

When you think of the upper part of your kitchen, which elements spring to mind? If you’re picturing ceilings or lighting, you’ve gone a little too far… We’re talking benchtops and splashbacks.

What we like to call the crowning components.

Jordan’s Top Picks

Stone Benchtops: WK-Quantum Quartz Bianco Classico Six
Splashback: Use the same stone as your benchtops for a smooth and continuous flow

Stone benchtops - a solid choice

Your benchtops are fundamental to your kitchen. Constantly in use, they come under a lot of strain. Which is why they need to be durable, strong and of course, divine to look at. Benchtops typically take up a large portion of kitchen real estate, so something for the eyes to feast on is essential.

WK-Quantum Quartz Bianco Classico Six

This is dappled elegance with an enviable resistant finish. No wonder it’s a Wood Wizards favourite. So much so in fact, they used it in their own Hampton renovation. With its marbled look and reflective surface, you simply can’t go wrong.

True beauty exudes from natural quartz, meaning each and every inch is completely unique. It’s stunning veining is matched in brilliance only by its tough finish – so even the clumsiest of cooks are safe! Check it out our recent Elsternwick transformation.

Featuring a one of a kind marbled design, this stone is perfected by its timeless, polished finish. It’s pure elegance would elevate any kitchen, and even better - it has fantastic versatility, working with a wide range of colour palettes and styles.

Splashbacks - keep it seamless

Jordan’s top pick for splashbacks is a little bit of a curveball. But for good reason.

Choosing a stone is the same as your benchtops is smart. It creates clean lines that will enliven your space whilst keeping it slick and refined. Reduce the clutter.

If you want to vary the textures, then be sure to keep the colours similar. With kitchens, the aim is always to find the beauty in simplicity. We work with our clients to refine design because inevitably the kitchen fills up with day to day items, appliances and so minimalism (with plenty of storage) is key.

Matching Materials

In our Elwood (Marine Parade) kitchen renovation, Bev and Rodney chose to use Cosentino Entzo stone for both their benchtop and splashbacks. It created an elegant continuity that flows effortlessly up the wall, subtly lifting the space. Smooth, yet striking.

Ceramic Character

Looking to add a little quirk or stand out? Opt for ceramic tiles. Available in all shapes, sizes and shades, you can add real character and oomph to your kitchen aesthetic. Commonly found in Country and Shaker kitchen designs, ceramic tiles are a gorgeous feature - creating interest with their contoured edges and 3D textures.

Practicality Reigns

For ultimate wipeability, glass splashbacks are brilliant. What’s more, is its versatility that makes this material so popular. You can match it to any colour palette you desire so design options are vast. Explore our Highett Road, Hampton kitchen, where we paired the MS splashback glass tone with the under-counter Dulux Ohio panel - a match made in heaven.
