The Cream of the Crop

Cabinetry + Colours

Picture the scene…

We’re mid-consultation, coffee in hand. Wood Wizards owner, experienced kitchen aficionado Jordan Woodchip Corbett, is narrowing down the “best of” when it comes to cabinetry and colours.

This might seem like a simple task. But we assure you, it isn’t.

Why?

Because here at Wood Wizards, our focus is not simply a trendy product list. It’s about working with you to find the perfect fit for your space. Carefully, and consciously, bringing all the elements of a kitchen together to seamlessly flow with your chosen style. It’s about layering the right combination of colour and form to make the room both flawless and functional.

We’re going to talk you through how you should be thinking about your cabinetry from start to finish, using a solid foundation to build your ideal look. And don’t worry, we also included a few lists because we secretly love those too.

We’ve worked together with Wood Wizards Kitchens on multiple cabinetry projects and knew we were in safe hands [...] The thing I like most about working with Jordan as a kitchen designer is that he will listen and take on board an overall vision, and then help to work out the functionality and detail to get the right balance between design and practicality [...] Based on our priorities, Jordan helped us to navigate where to spend our budget, and importantly where to save money. I honestly couldn’t be happier with the attention to detail, quality product and expertise that the Wood Wizards team provides.

Start with style

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again - style is the bedrock. It is where your design should always begin. Jordan’s advice is; take note of the layout of your home, and most importantly, the floors.

The texture, hue and form of your flooring will influence your cabinetry material, profiles and colour palette.

If you’re already working with original features, a Modern or Country kitchen approach may be just the ticket, with natural elements exuding a casual yet rustic feel.

If you are planning to re-polish flooring, or are opting for a more reflective surface, then a Contemporary or Handleless kitchen might bring the sleek finish you’re looking for.

Whatever you choose, it needs to work with the rest of your home.

After that, the fun begins...

Profiles - don’t go against the grain

You can’t mix oil and water. So don’t throw together opposing styles. Choosing cabinetry profiles is all about finding the perfect combination. Each door and drawer has to work with the rest of the space, as well as your materials.

Going handleless? Smooth profiling will match brilliantly.

Looking for simple and homely? Try a shaker-style panel.

Whatever you decide, the aim is to make sure it all blends beautifully.

Colours - mix it up

An amalgamation of carefully chosen tones can add interest and intrigue to your kitchen. Remember though, whatever your palette of choice, simplicity is always key. Once you’ve created your list, take some time to narrow down your choices to a few specific colours you’d like incorporated into your space.

White just works. It’s a fact.

Not only is it timeless, but it creates the illusion of more space. Be warned though - white is not simply one colour... oh no. Once you delve into the world of colour swatches and samples you'll be amazed at quite how many white's there actually are!

Materials matter – pick wisely

Whatever your style preference, you cannot argue with the fact that a timber finish brings an elegant, organic quality to your kitchen. But we’ll let you in on a little secret… when it comes to kitchens, ‘timber’ is rarely made from actual wood.

In a nutshell – timber is a relatively soft material and is prone to scratching, denting, discolouration, water (and other) staining, and heat impact. On top of that, it’s pricey. Natural wood can be up to three times more expensive than a timber style laminate.

So, other than cost, why opt for timber laminate? Not only does it look exquisite, but laminate has superior features, such as durability and scratch-resistant properties. It’ll stand the test of time, and look good doing it. Plus, it won’t break the budget.
