Understated elegance: Shaker style.

Distinctly minimal and clean-lined, the Shaker style kitchen has little or no ornamentation and it’s stood the test of time. A truly traditional kitchen, the Shaker style combines simplicity and grace, giving you that heritage feel that works for any sized space.

Originally inspired by the religious movement that lent its namesake (the Quakers = Shakers), the style is as modest as the religious views of the group. The Shaker’s built furniture using the bare essentials, and this style harks back to that simpler time, where true craftsmen constructed practical designs from quality wood and dovetail joints, with no frills.

Characteristics

These little nuggets of insight into the Shaker style kitchen style aren’t exhaustive, but they’re a useful beginning to consider the different elements of kitchen design that you would like incorporated into your renovation and redesign.

Space & Light

  • Making the most out of your space.

  • Fresh and bright, versatile kitchen concept.

  • Natural light is king, but consider discreet lighting fixtures or spotlights to enhance the natural.

Cabinetry & Benchtops

  • Flat, recessed front cabinetry panels, with a focus on classic American woods like pine, maple, walnut and cherry.

  • Wooden, or marble benchtop materials – coordinate or contrast with your cabinetry, for different vibes.

  • Zero elaborate mouldings, or fussy decoration – simple, clean.

  • Islands can enhance the Shaker style, and are a clever kitchen storage solution.

Colours & Materials

  • Let the natural wood speak for itself, capture the spirt of the original craftsmen.

  • Consider rustic or vintage metal handles, or sleek, brushed steel, instead of natural wood.

  • Natural aesthetic, with earthy colour tones.

Custom Ideas & Accents

  • Add statement antiques, for a heritage feel.

  • Laminate or glass can add a more modern edge to the Shaker style.

Our experience with Wood Wizards was exceptional and exceeded all expectations. We undertook a complex renovation, which included the intricacies of a very detailed and specific new kitchen, bathroom vanities, cabinetry and bedroom joinery. The plans went through a number of evolutions and changes and throughout the entire process the team were extraordinarily patient and provided a great depth of design expertise and knowledge. Commencing with the second-generation owner Jordan as the central contact supported by Hooman on the drawing board, the level headed production manager Darko and Megan on the administration side, it’s a complete team. Backed up and supported by quality installation and after service attention to detail we are now enjoying our beautiful home environment. Nothing at all appeared too inconvenient to the team and their total commitment as articulated at the very beginning of the journey as wanting us as clients to achieve a final product that we had hoped for was certainly achieved. We could not have been happier with the experience and quality of the outcome.
