Practicality is Paramount

Storage aplenty and cooking with ease.

It was a big decision for Suzanne & Martin to renovate their family home, and when they came to us, they had a clear idea of exactly what they wanted. Afterall, they had been envisioning it for a while.

As is so often the case, with children growing up and soon to fly the coop, they were ready for a change. The goal? Unwavering practicality. Of course, with a pinch of style and a generous dose of character…

When it comes to a kitchen, the heart of your home, what is perhaps most important – and always incredibly personal – is the way you actually use it day-to-day. Having a space, and layout, that works for your household routine is vital. In this case, both holding demanding jobs fuelled by hectic schedules, Suzanne & Martin were looking to create a kitchen that was uber functional as well as inviting. Not to mention the need for our wizards to work around their busy timetables, resulting in cleverly planned renovation works which caused the family minimal disruptions.

From overall design to bespoke tucked away storage compartments, we worked closely with Suzanne & Martin to eke out every inch of space and reconfigure the cabinetry to something that made total sense.

We started with the layout.

Having been in their family home for over 20 years, they had learned to live with the floorplan, but they knew it could be improved. Knocking through the existing cabinetry, we created a walkthrough direct into the dining area; opening up the room and making it far more family friendly.

To make up for the necessary sacrifice of a few cupboards, cabinetry across the main wall was extended to the ceiling, ensuring ample storage space for cooking essentials. Tesrol Design 560 profile 2 pack painted doors (in Dulux Vivid White Satin) create depth within the space, cleverly using edged borders to frame the panels - adding texture to the crisp white face.

From countertops to flooring and tiles... the 80s-style sea foam blue had run its course, and it was time to go. What a transformation it made! Almost instantly, the space was catapulted into modern day.

Upgrading to WK-Quantum Quartz Ash Grey benchtops and Melbourne Safety Glass splashbacks truly elevates the kitchen’s aesthetic, with a pale palette brightening the room and reflecting the light. It just invites you in. Tucked just beneath is an abundance of storage, 2 Pack painted cabinetry featuring a classic shaker profile and Lincoln Sentry Margo Stainless Steel handles, poised and ready for grabbing all your go-to utensils.

It would be remiss of us not to mention the floor, when it looks that good. The stunning timber which replaced the blue tiles adds the beautiful natural variation that only timber can bring. We are always here to assist with various design elements that make up your kitchen, check out our getting started page to explore the elements worth considering when embarking on your own renovation journey.

Replacing the cooking appliances altogether, Suzanne & Martin opted for Scandinavian-inspired Asko steam oven and cooktop which is known for its contemporary design, flawless function, assured durability and, importantly, its high environmental standards.

From the Miele rangehood to the Franke sink, Suzanne & Martin’s kitchen is brimming with mod-cons and gorgeous appliances that make cooking a true delight. We just love this sleek and contoured design, which encapsulates the Modern kitchen to a tee. Beloved for its clean simplicity, this style makes living stress-free and streamlined. And after a busy day, what more could you wish for?

Featuring Blum Intivo drawers, peace is guaranteed. The unique roller runner system makes them glide as if they’re weightless… which means no slamming or banging about while cooking up a storm.

Whether it’s your beloved wine collection, or a packet of Tim Tam’s (AKA comfort food at its best), time and time again our clients tell us that kitchen storage is critical. Though we’ve ensured that there’s a bunch of cupboard space, we’ve also loaded up on drawers.

In general, when it comes to base cabinets, drawers offer you maximum space and are great for keeping cookware, crockery, and even pots and pans secure in place. Plus, since they can be pulled out all the way, they actually allow you to see everything inside so no items get neglected or forgotten

We’ve been in our home over 20 years and you learn to live with the layout, even though it doesn’t make much sense. Following some serious design thinking, we went with a friend’s recommendation to work with Wood Wizards on our kitchen renovation and we are so glad that we did. We now have a beautiful and classic modern kitchen with all the storage and functionality we could ever need. The addition of a new entry point from the dining room really opens up the living area, and the custom-built wine storage is the perfect use of space. Thank you to Jordan and the team for helping us to realise the potential of our kitchen.
